VFI®-7202 Ablative Silicone

VFI-7202 Ablative Silicone is a black sacrificial coating that protects surfaces from deteriorating with continuous reapplications after bursts of intense heat and flames. Silicone’s unique, non-organic chemical properties prevent the coating from burning or combusting to protect masonry and metal. A high thixotropic nature allows it to be pumped for a quick turnaround with a high build on the surface at up to 100 mil passes. When necessary, VFI-7001 Silicone Catalyst can be used as a two-part system with VFI-7202 Ablative to further accelerate the cure. The primary color of VFI-7202 is black but dark gray (VFI-7200) and white (VFI-7201) are available.

VFI-7202 Ablative Silicone is a sacrificial coating that protects surfaces from deteriorating with continuous reapplications after bursts of intense heat and flames.

Features & Benefits

  • High build allows for fewer coats to get to the final thickness
  • Ablative properties protect the substrate from heat and flame
  • Easy one-component product for optimal spraying without advanced training
  • Capable of accepting VFI-7001 Silicone Catalyst for quick turnaround times
  • Protects multiple surfaces, including masonry, concrete, and metal

Instructions for Use:

Surface Preparation

To ensure proper adhesion, the surface should be clean and dry. If concerned about optimal adhesion over concrete, masonry, or metal, apply VFI-#11 9:1 Epoxy Primer. If silicone remains from a previous coating application, do not use a primer, as this will negatively affect the adhesion of the new coating.

Application

If separation is visible, mix the material with a paddle mixer or drum roller until uniform. VFI-7202 Ablative Silicone is a moisture-cured material, and it will start to react with ambient moisture if exposed to the environment. Do not apply if rain and moisture are forecasted. For best results, ensure ambient and surface temperatures are greater than 40°F during application and the material is at least 60°F before use.

VFI’s preferred and only approved machine is the BRAAS unit which has extensive flow rates for large surface areas and thick-build coatings. The machine is capable of being used with up to 3 spray guns at the same time.

There is no limit to coverage thickness, but the material will start to sag if applied at a rate greater than 100 mils in a single pass on vertical surfaces. When applying subsequent coats, do not exceed 48 hours in between, but ensure the product has fully cured before the next coat application.

Cleanup

When cleaning equipment, a cleaning solvent of chemically dry mineral spirits is recommended.

Safety

*Always read the safety data sheet before working with chemicals

Use chemicals only as directed and for their intended purpose. Do not dispose of chemicals down the drain. Most chemicals must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

PPE to avoid all unnecessary exposure:

  • Eye protection – wear approved safety glasses and any additional eye protection as necessary
  • Hand protection – wear chemically resistant protective gloves (nitrile, butyl, or neoprene)
  • Skin and body protection – wear suitable protective clothing
  • Respiratory protection – in case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated exposure levels, the hazards of the product, and the safe working limits of the selected respirator

Product Limitations

  • Incompatible materials – oxidizers
  • Conditions to avoid – heat, water, and incompatible materials
  • Chemical stability – stable under normal storage conditions
  • Reactivity & hazardous reactions – no dangerous reaction known under normal use, but will react with water
  • Hazardous decomposition products – may include, and are not limited to, oxides of carbon

Potential Health Hazards

  • May cause respiratory tract irritation.
  • May cause stomach distress, nausea, or vomiting if swallowed.
  • May cause skin irritation or sensitization: redness, drying, defatting, or cracking.
  • May cause eye irritation: discomfort, pain, excess blinking and tear production, redness, and swelling.

*If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical advice or attention. Call a poison control center or doctor if swallowed.
