VFI®-202 50 D Fast Polyurea Coating

VFI-202 50 D Fast Polyurea Coating is a fast-setting, two-component, spray-applied coating that excels at low-build, thinner passes on prepared metal, concrete, and masonry surfaces. It is best used for industrial applications when spraying vertically or overhead and won’t drip. It creates structure over the surface to provide protection from chemicals, abrasion, and impact. The coating is perfect when a faster setting time is needed, and self-texturing is desired. VFI offers different polyurea formulas in slow (VFI-200) and medium (VFI-201) setting speeds based on application needs.

Features & Benefits

  • Moisture insensitive – low sensitivity when exposed to moisture due to fast-setting abilities
  • Excellent physical properties – tensile strength and elongation increase durability and longevity
  • Fast speed – allows you to spray overhead without dripping
  • Withstands thermocycling – will not crack or break due to extreme temperature changes
  • Chemical & abrasion resistant – protects against chemical corrosion and resists wearing to maintain original structure
  • 100% solids – no VOCs and retains 100% of its thickness after curing

Instructions for Use:

Surface Preparation

For quality adhesion, ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dirt, dust, or debris before coating. Clean surfaces containing oil and grease with a pressure washer. If mold, mildew, and fungus spots are present, treat them with a concentrated chlorine solution. Remove all loose paint, rust, and scale from the surface by sandblasting or grinding. The coating will only perform to its desired effect if all needed repairs are made to the surface prior to coating. When coating concrete, it must be aged a minimum of 28 days to prevent blisters from forming.

Application

Premix the Poly (B side) until uniform before applying the coating. VFI-202 should be brought to a minimum temperature of 65°F before use. VFI recommends applying the coating with a plural component high-pressure spray rig capable of spraying at 2,500 psi and temperatures between 135°F-150°F.

Apply the coating at a minimum of 30 mil passes. If more coats are needed, you must apply them within the 15-minute open window. VFI recommends applying a UV-stable topcoat after VFI-202 has cured for optimal protection and UV stability. Allow the coating to cure for at least 24 hours.

Cleanup

Use xylene or MEK to clean application equipment. When cleaning spray lines, VFI recommends using VFI-8005 Pump Flush to flush uncured material out of the hoses.

Safety

*Always read the safety data sheet before working with chemicals

Use chemicals only as directed and for their intended purpose. Do not dispose of chemicals down the drain. Most chemicals must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

PPE to avoid all unnecessary exposure:

  • Eye protection – wear approved, fitted dust or splashproof chemical safety goggles and face protection such as a face shield
  • Hand protection – wear chemically resistant protective gloves (nitrile, butyl, or neoprene)
  • Skin and body protection – wear suitable protective clothing
  • Respiratory protection – in case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated exposure levels, the hazards of the product, and the safe working limits of the selected respirator

Product Limitations

VFI-202 contains isocyanate, which causes skin irritation and can be toxic if inhaled as particulate matter. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors and repeated skin contact. Use only in a well-ventilated area. For applications exceeding 100 mils, it would require multiple passes to prevent excessive amounts of heat.

  • Incompatible materials – A side: strong bases, acids, alcohols, amines, and water. B side: strong oxidizers and acids
  • Conditions to avoid – heat and incompatible materials
  • Chemical stability – stable under normal storage conditions
  • Reactivity & hazardous reactions – no dangerous reaction known under normal use
  • Hazardous decomposition products – may include, and are not limited to, oxides of carbon and oxides of nitrogen, plus isocyanates for the A side

Potential Health Hazards

  • May cause stomach distress, nausea, or vomiting if swallowed. B side is toxic and may cause burns.
  • May cause respiratory tract irritation, allergy and asthma symptoms, or breathing difficulties. B side may cause burns.
  • Causes skin irritation and sensitization: redness, edema, drying, defatting, and cracking of the skin. B side is toxic and causes severe burns, redness, pain, and blisters when in contact with the skin. Repeated exposure to this material can result in absorption through the skin, causing a significant health hazard.
  • Causes serious eye irritation or damage: discomfort, pain, excess blinking and tear production, marked redness, and swelling of the conjunctiva. B side may cause burns.

*If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical advice or attention. Call a poison control center or doctor if swallowed, ingested, or when skin contact occurs.
