VFI®-605-1 White Acrylic Coating

VFI-605-1 White Acrylic Coating is a single-component, fluid-applied, elastomeric roof coating. As a water-based product, it is best used when a large roof needs to be sprayed and cleanup is important. For smaller roofs, it is easy to roll, and minimal labor is required to get the job done quickly. When applied as a top coat in a commercial roof restoration system, it forms a seamless, waterproof film to protect the substrate from impacts, UV radiation, and weathering. For future recoats, VFI-605-1 can be recoated with any type of liquid-applied roof coating.

VFI-605-1 White Acrylic Coating from VFI is an elastomeric roof coating that forms a seamless film for commercial roof restoration.

Features & Benefits

  • Better impact resistance – holds up against physical wear and tear
  • Better durability – withstands extreme weather conditions and UV rays, helping to extend the life of the roof
  • Improved dirt resistance – less sticky finish, resulting in less dirt pickup, less maintenance, and a cleaner roof
  • Low VOC content – uses less VOCs than the EPA standard
  • Miami Dade approved – not all acrylic products pass ASTM 6083 Type I, but VFI-605 does
  • Easy application and cleanup – can be applied using a variety of methods and cleanup is quick and easy with water

Instructions for Use:

Surface Preparation

Detailed surface preparation will depend on the substrate being coated and the application method. Using a broom, clean the entire substrate of dirt and debris that may affect adhesion. Power wash the surface as needed, and use a roof cleaning detergent to scrub areas with grease, oil, and animal fats. Rinse the roof of all cleaning agents and allow it to dry before proceeding with roof restoration.

Make necessary repairs to the roof’s structural components. Gaps and seams should be tight and flush. Eliminate gaps and deflections bigger than ¼” with additional screws or rivets. Loose or backed-out fasteners must be tightened or replaced with oversized fasteners.

Application

VFI always recommends the use of a primer (VFI-#11 9:1 Epoxy Primer) for improved adhesion. A multicoat method using VFI-640-1 Gray Acrylic Coating as a base coat is also recommended before applying a VFI-605-1 White Acrylic Coating top coat. The base coat should be applied at a minimum rate of 1.25 gallons per square. Allow it to cure before applying the topcoat.

VFI-605-1 can be applied to the surface with a sprayer, roller, or brush. The temperature must be between 50°F -120°F during application for proper adhesion. Apply the maintenance top coat at a minimum rate of 1 gallon per square. The coverage rate of the base and top coat should total a minimum of 2.25 gallons per square. Check specifications for required wet and dry film thickness.

*Roofs with a slope less than or equal to 1/12 should be fully reinforced with polyester fabric.

Cleanup

All application tools, including spray equipment, brushes, rollers, etc., can be cleaned with water. If the material has cured on or in equipment, use mineral spirits.

Safety

*Always read the safety data sheet before working with chemicals

Use chemicals only as directed and for their intended purpose. Do not dispose of chemicals down the drain. Most chemicals must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

PPE to avoid all unnecessary exposure:

  • Eye protection – wear safety glasses and any additional eye protection as necessary
  • Hand protection – wear chemically resistant protective gloves (nitrile, butyl, or neoprene)
  • Skin and body protection – wear suitable protective clothing
  • Respiratory protection – in case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated exposure levels, the hazards of the product, and the safe working limits of the selected respirator

Product Limitations

VFI-605-1 White Acrylic Coating must be protected from freezing. The temperature must remain above 40°F until the coating has fully cured for ensured adhesion. Rain and moisture will negatively affect adhesion, so stop application if either is present. VFI-605-1 is not recommended on flat roofs or where ponding water is present.

  • Incompatible materials – none known
  • Conditions to avoid – heat
  • Chemical stability – stable under normal storage conditions
  • Reactivity & hazardous reactions – no dangerous reaction known under normal use
  • Hazardous decomposition products – may include, and are not limited to, oxides of carbon
