VFI®-640-1 Gray Acrylic Coating

VFI®-640-1 Gray Acrylic Coating is a liquid applied coating that forms a seamless film using acrylic chemistry. VFI-640-1 provides UV stability and a waterproofing membrane in a water based single component package that cures at room temperature. VFI-640-1 was specifically engineered for use in VOC sensitive areas and is resistant to high temperatures and oxidation.

Product Details

  • Product Color: Standard color is gray. Additional premium colors or color matching services are matched in 605-1 acrylic elastomeric topcoat contact Volatile Free, Inc. with any additional color matching services.
  • UV Stability: This product is UV color stable and has long-term UV testing. For additional information contact Volatile Free, Inc.
  • Coverage/Thickness Requirement: See VFI specifications for specific coverage information or contact Volatile Free, Inc. for additional coverage/thickness requirements.
  • Storage Stability/Shelf Life: 18-month shelf life from date of manufacture when stored and sealed in unopened containers between 40°F - 75°F. Water based products must be protected from freezing. Material should be brought to a minimum temperature of 65°F before use.
  • Equipment: 640-1 gray acrylic elastomer may be applied by sprayer, roller, or brush. If sprayed use single component spray equipment capable of maintaining a minimum constant spray pressure of 5000 psi. 5:1 transfer pump should be used with drums.   • Surface Preparation: Surface preparation depends on application and substrate being coated. All surfaces should be cleaned, prepped and free of any oils, dirt or films that could affect the product adhesion. Contact Volatile Free Inc. with any additional questions.
  • Mixing: Mixing until uniform is required on all material before use. Mix times may vary depending on volume and mixing method, please contact Volatile Free, Inc. for more information on any specific mixing questions and requirements.
  • Material Application: Material can be applied between 50°F - 120°F and the temperature must remain above 40°F until full cure. Apply only when rain or other moisture contamination will not present before fully cured. Standard application is a multiple coat method with 24 wet mil passes until the desired thickness is reached. The time between subsequent coats should not exceed 48 hours, but materials should be allowed to cure before applying the second coat. Material cure time will vary with temperature.
  • Primers: Volatile Free, Inc. recommends adhesion patch testing before use and additional adhesion patch testing with the chosen primer.   • Cleanup: Preferred clean-up method is water. Please contact Volatile Free, Inc. for more information on clean-up of equipment and tools.
  • Thinning: Do not thin prior to application.
  • Precautions: See Safety Data Sheet for complete safety data. Do not add any foreign material to this product. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors and prolonged or repeated skin contact. Use only with adequate ventilation.

Acrylic System

Volatile Free, Inc. provides a very functional and easy to apply Low VOC Acrylic System. Water based acrylic chemistry provides a low VOC and low-cost product with easy single component application methods. 605-1 elastomeric acrylic topcoat excels at providing a monolithic membrane to prevent leaks and is UV stable. We recommend using our 640-1 elastomeric acrylic basecoat as the basecoat underneath the 605-1 acrylic topcoat, because it is fully UV stable, and will not degrade before the topcoat is applied, and it comes in a gray color. Using a two-color system to apply the acrylic helps to ensure even coverage and give you greater ease in tracking what needs to be covered. The acrylic system provides a good low-cost alternative to silicone on a roof with proper sloping and drainage. 605-1 elastomeric acrylic topcoat is fully UV and color stable and can be made into many different premium colors, but the preferred and most energy efficient color is white. A primer is recommended over most substrates and will vary depending on what substrate is being coated.

Silicone/Acrylic Hybrid System

The Acrylic/Silicone Hybrid System combines the best performance characteristics of acrylic and silicone liquid applied roof coating lines. 640-1 acrylic gray base coat, used together with non-woven polyester fabric, offers a seamless coating with lasting adhesion and excellent waterproofing characteristics. Excellent UV stability in the 640-1 acrylic gray basecoat gives stability until the topcoat can be applied. Sealguard 991® standard solids, silicone topcoat is then applied resulting in superior protection against standing water and aging with UV resistance. Sealguard 991’s excellent adhesion allows for direct adhesion to the 640-1 acrylic gray basecoat without a primer. With good adhesion to most substrates a primer is used to provide protection to the acrylic/silicone hybrid system and adhesion when necessary. The Acrylic/Silicone Hybrid System is unique to the liquid applied roofing industry and is exclusive to Volatile Free, Inc. and VFI approved distributors.
