Sacrificial Coatings

Sacrificial coatings are used as protection in several industries, including marine and aerospace technology. They are preferred when other methods are too expensive or a hindrance to apply. In some cases, the environment may be too extreme for some materials to last.

A sacrificial coating acts as a temporary barrier. For a period of time, it inhibits abrasive conditions from making contact with the underlying surface. Environmental factors or mechanical abrasions will slowly remove it over time. It is then reapplied when needed for repeated protection. With proper maintenance of the sacrificial coating, the underlying surface stays protected indefinitely.

For over 25 years, VFI has been producing standard and specialty coatings as protective solutions. They are flexible, considering substrate movement, but also strong enough to endure various conditions. They will adhere to a variety of surfaces, including metal, concrete, and wood. Our sacrificial coatings are based on three chemistries:

Polyurea. These coatings are used when physical protection from mechanical abrasion is required. They are often preferred over hybrids and urethanes for their properties and low moisture sensitivity. We have mainly seen them used in the mining industry. They act as a protective barrier for gravel pits and mining equipment. VFI recommends our 50 D general-purpose polyurea. It can be applied by spray quickly for little to no downtime. As a durable yet flexible material, it can resist excessive wear until it must be reapplied.
Polyurea Hybrid. Like polyurea coatings, hybrids are also used as physical protection from mechanical abrasion. They have a combination of qualities from both polyurea and urethane. They are also a more cost-effective option compared to polyureas. VFI’s recommended coating is a 60 D material that sets in seconds. It can be sprayed on horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces without dripping.
Silicone. Silicone has innate properties to resist heat, flames, and burning. It stops excessive heat from causing damage to the substrate when masonry brick is unable to. With repeated applications, you can fully protect a surface from fire for extended periods of time. VFI offers various silicone coatings that can achieve high builds and quick turnarounds when necessary. They are easy to apply with a brush, roller, or spray equipment for seamless protection.
