VFI-1017 Porous Surface Primer

VFI-1017 Porous Surface Primer is a high solvent-based, single-component urethane primer. It is used to prepare painted and porous surfaces for the application of an approved top coat. It also increases adhesion between existing and newly applied polyurea or polyurethane coatings. Applied easily by brush, roller, or spray, the colorless primer seals porous surfaces and promotes adhesion, forming a solvent and vapor resistant film. VFI-1017 has a quick dry time for same-day top coat application.

  • Convenient single-component packaging for easy application
  • Fast drying for quick application of a polyurea or urethane top coat
  • Versatile application by spray equipment, roller, or brush
  • Excellent adhesion to painted/coated surfaces
  • Compatible with spray-on bedliners (VFI-542, VFI-543, & VFI-544)

Equipment

VFI-1017 can be applied to surfaces by single-component spray equipment, rollers, or brushes.

Surface Preparation

Thoroughly degrease the surface with acetone or MEK to remove contaminants, such as grease, dirt, oils, and loose particles that could affect adhesion. Wire brushing, grinding, sandblasting, or solvent cleaning may be required to expose the painted or porous surface. Once scuffed, degrease the surface again, and allow it to dry before applying the primer. Apply painter’s tape and cover all areas you do not plan on priming or top coating.

Note: Most porous surfaces must be sealed with a primer to ensure a strong adhesive bond forms with the top coat.

Mixing

Mixing VFI-1017 is required before use, as some separation may occur from storage. It should be thoroughly mixed before each use to ensure the material is uniform. Mix times may vary depending on the volume of the material used and the mixing method.

Application Guidelines

Do not heat the material before or during application. Only apply the primer when the surface temperature is between 40°F – 120°F. If the temperature decreases below 40°F before the primer is fully applied and cured, it will affect adhesion results. Do not apply it in areas where rain or other moisture contamination is present before a top coat can be applied.

The standard application over a smooth surface is 4 wet mils or up to 400 sq/ft per gallon. Apply enough material in a uniform coat to thoroughly wet the surface, and avoid making puddles. After the primer has dried, a top coat must be applied the same day, within the 8-hour recoat window. If the primer is not top-coated within the recoat window, it will result in poor inter-coat adhesion.

Cleanup

To clean application equipment before the material has cured, VFI recommends using xylene or MEK.

Storage/Shelf Life

The material must be stored in a clean, dry building between 60°F – 90°F. The shelf life of unopened containers is 12 months from the date of manufacture.

Precautions

VFI-1017 is not intended as a top coat and contains VOCs over the EPA-regulated amount at 643 g/L. It contains isocyanate, which can irritate the skin and is toxic if inhaled as particulate matter. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors and repeated skin contact. Use only with adequate ventilation. Protect the material from moisture. Water will cause the product to generate carbon dioxide, creating high pressure in closed containers. The primer does not have corrosion inhibitive properties. Do not thin or add foreign material to this product. See Safety Data Sheet for more information on safety procedures and necessary personal protective equipment.
