VFI-1009 Cleaning Detergent

VFI-1009 Cleaning Detergent is a 100% biodegradable, water-based, general-purpose roof cleaner. It is an essential part of surface preparation to remove grease, oil, tough soils, and other contaminants from roofing substrates. The detergent ensures the roof is clean and free of residue before a primer, coating, or foam is applied. Starting a commercial roof restoration project with a prepared membrane will guarantee the adhesion of subsequent roof coatings to the surface. VFI-1009 is a versatile cleaner that pretreats masonry, concrete, deck, roof, and wall surfaces. Packaged as a cleaning concentrate, it requires a 1:10 dilution with water to remove tough stains. It works well in locations that limit the use of hazardous cleaning chemicals due to environmental regulations.

  • Cleans the surface thoroughly to allow for better adhesion of a primer or roof coating
  • Formulated for use on roofing substrates, decks, and walls
  • Cleans and degreases without the use of harsh chemicals
  • 100% biodegradable formula that is safe for use in areas with strict VOC regulations
  • Can be applied by sprayer, roller, or brush and is easily rinsed with water
  • A concentrated 10:1 dilution for increased useable material

Equipment

VFI-1009 can be applied to the surface by a single-component sprayer, nap roller, or industrial paintbrush. For small projects when spraying, we recommend using a handheld Hudson sprayer with a spray wand. For larger projects, we recommend using a small airless sprayer like Graco Ultra 395 PC, which can provide up to 3,300 psi. It has a maximum flow rate of .54 GPM with ¼ inch hoses up to 150 ft.

Surface Preparation

Remove large amounts of dirt, leaves, and debris from the roof with a broom. Inspect the roof, including flashing, seams, vents, metal caps, etc., and repair as needed. A chlorine solution can be used to treat algae, mildew, or fungus growth. Remove rusting and other oxidation with a grinder or wire brush. Rinse the roof and allow the surface to dry before using the cleaning detergent.

Mixing

VFI-1009 must first be diluted at a ratio of 1 part cleaning detergent to 10 parts water. Measure the amount of water needed in a bucket and add the concentrate afterward before mixing. Mix until a uniform mixture is achieved. Mix times will vary depending on the mixing method and volume.

Application Requirements

Bring VFI-1009 to a minimum temperature of 65°F before use. Apply the detergent to the surface at a rate of 150-400 square feet per gallon. The total amount of cleaner you’ll need is specific to the job/application. Allow the solution to stand on and saturate the substrate for at least 15 minutes, and then scrub with a stiff bristled broom or brush.

Use a pressure washer capable of achieving a minimum of 2000 PSI with clean water to remove the material until all soap bubbles are gone. On sloped roofs, work from the lowest point to the highest and then back down for a double rinse. On flat roofs, work away from the drains and back. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly before applying primers, polyurethane foams, or roof coatings. Drying time will depend on temperature, humidity, and air movement.

Cleaning

Use water to clean any equipment used to apply VFI-1009. If sprayed, flush water through the spray lines until the detergent is fully removed.

Storage/Shelf Life

The material shelf life is 24 months (2 years) from the date of manufacture. Store in a dry, temperature-controlled space in sealed and unopened containers between 60°F – 90°F.

Precautions

VFI-1009 is a water-based product and must be protected from freezing. The material is thinned at 10 parts water to 1 part cleaning detergent. Avoid breathing in vapors or repeated skin contact. Do not add foreign material to the product. Use only with adequate ventilation. See Safety Data Sheet for complete safety data.
