VFI®-608 Waterproofing Concrete Additive

VFI-608 Waterproofing Concrete Additive is a water-based, 100% acrylic admixture that is added to cement to create a reinforced waterproof barrier. Once mixed, it becomes a durable compound designed to be used in combination with fabric over masonry and concrete surfaces. VFI-608 is stiffer, more rigid, and applies thick to protect the underlying substrate from cracking. As an acrylic based additive, it’s a more environmentally friendly product. It can also be used in deck restoration applications.

Instructions for Use:

Surface Preparation

Application method and type of substrate will yield more detailed surface preparation requirements. Clean and remove any oils, dirt, or films from the substrate that could affect adhesion. Power wash the roof to get rid of hard-to-clean contaminants. Use a liquid detergent to treat grease and oil spots. Use a concentrated chlorine solution on areas containing mold and algae. Be sure to repair or replace any structural components before application, including drains, vents, gutters, flashing, or other penetrations. Repair all gaps to be tight and flush. Tighten or replace loose or backed-out fasteners with oversized fasteners. After cleaning the roof, rinse off the cleaning agents and allow it to dry before proceeding.


Before using, mix VFI-608 Waterproofing Concrete Additive until uniform. Once VFI-608 is mixed, combine one part additive, one part cold water, and three parts of type 1 Portland Cement or a similar general-purpose cement, and mix until uniform. Mix times will vary depending on volume and mixing method.

The cement mixture can be applied with a brush, roller, or trowel between 50°F – 120°F. The temperature must remain above 40°F through the application and cure process. Rain and other moisture contaminants cannot be present during application. VFI-608 uses a wet-on-wet method to apply a minimum of 3 gallons per square with fabric embedded. The first layer should use 1.5 gallons per square before placing polyester fabric on top while it’s still wet. After laying down the fabric, top it off with another 1.5-gallon layer. If more coats are needed, apply them within 48 hours after the material has cured. The temperature may affect the time it takes to cure.


VFI recommends cleaning any equipment used in the application of VFI-608 with water.

Use chemicals only as directed and for their intended purpose. Do not dispose of chemicals down the drain. Most chemicals must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

PPE to avoid all unnecessary exposure:

  • Eye protection – wear safety glasses and any additional eye protection as necessary
  • Hand protection – wear chemically resistant protective gloves (nitrile, butyl, or neoprene)
  • Skin and body protection – wear suitable protective clothing
  • Respiratory protection – in case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated exposure levels, the hazards of the product, and the safe working limits of the selected respirator

Product Limitations

As a water-based product, VFI-608 must be protected from freezing. Bring the material to 65°F before use.

Potential Health Hazards
