VFI®-7001 Silicone Catalyst

VFI-7001 Silicone Catalyst is a tin-based catalyst system that is specifically made to work in conjunction only with the VFI-7200 Ablative Silicone Series to produce a Catalyzed 7200 Series. The catalyst is used as a 99:1 (silicone to catalyst) ratio while spraying to produce accelerated cure times that are independent of ambient moisture levels. Once the Catalyzed 7200 Series is created, the material will harden within 2 hours at 70°F

VFI-7001 Silicone Catalyst is a tin-based catalyst system that is specifically made to work in conjunction only with the VFI-7200 Ablative Silicone Series to produce a Catalyzed 7200 Series.

Features & Benefits

  • Unique two-component system that produces results 5 times faster than uncatalyzed VFI-7200
  • High build allows for fewer coats to get to the final thickness
  • Ablative properties protect the substrate from heat and flame
  • Protects multiple surfaces, including masonry, concrete, and metal
  • Protects multiple surfaces, including masonry, concrete, and metal

Instructions for Use:

Surface Preparation

The surface should be clean and dry for ensuring the adhesion of the Catalyzed 7200 Series. When concerned about optimal adhesion, use VFI-#11 9:1 Epoxy Primer over concrete, masonry, or metal. Existing silicone from previous applications should not be coated with a primer because it will negatively affect adhesion.

Application

The catalyst should be checked for separation and mixed until uniform before daily use. Ensure the ambient and surface temperatures are above 40°F during application. The cure speed will increase at higher temperatures. Before application, the material should be at least 60°F. Do not apply if rain and other moisture contaminants are present.

To produce an accelerated cure when applying the Catalyzed 7200 Series, VFI recommends using a pump machine known as the BSI Rapid Ablative Application System (BRAAS). It effectively combines the 99:1 mix ratio of coating and catalyst required to harden within 2 hours. The machine has a max operating pressure of 256 bar, an air inlet pressure of 6 bar, and a pressure ratio of 32:1 with an output of 306 ccm per cycle.

There is no limit to coverage thickness, but it will start to sag if more than 100 mils are applied in a single pass on vertical surfaces. When coating at 100 mils, allow the coating to cure for a minimum of 1 hour before applying additional coats.

Cleanup

When VFI-7001 is combined with VFI-7200, use chemically dry mineral spirits to clean application equipment. If you are cleaning equipment that was only in contact with the catalyst, use water as a cleanup solvent.

Safety

*Always read the safety data sheet before working with chemicals

Use chemicals only as directed and for their intended purpose. Do not dispose of chemicals down the drain. Most chemicals must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

PPE to avoid all unnecessary exposure:

  • Eye protection – approved safety glasses and any additional eye protection are recommended
  • Hand protection – wear chemically resistant protective gloves (nitrile, butyl, or neoprene)
  • Skin and body protection – wear suitable protective clothing
  • Respiratory protection – use a full-face supplied air respirator

Product Limitations

  • Incompatible materials – strong bases and strong oxidizing agents
  • Conditions to avoid – incompatible materials
  • Chemical stability – stable under normal storage conditions
  • Reactivity & hazardous reactions – no data available
  • Hazardous decomposition products – may include, but are not limited to, oxides of carbon and tin/tin oxides

Potential Health Hazards

  • May cause respiratory tract irritation.
  • May cause stomach distress, nausea, or vomiting if swallowed.
  • May cause skin irritation or sensitization: redness, drying, defatting, or cracking.
  • May cause eye irritation: discomfort, pain, excess blinking and tear production, redness, and swelling.

*If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical advice or attention. Call a poison control center or doctor if swallowed.
